Thursday saw the arrival of Hampshire Fire Service who made an entrance in a fire engine, special equipment unit and a crashed car in tow. This caused a stir on campus as they were hard to miss, placed outside the stripe on the Plaza.
With research suggesting that drivers between 16 and 29 make up nearly 50 per cent of all driver fatalities, it was important to target a student demographic to help promote a better understanding and responsibility of driving safely on the roads.
With the rise in number of crashes and subsequent deaths caused by mobile phone usage and under the influence of drink and drugs, Hampshire fire service spent the day on campus talking to students about their wellbeing and asking them to 'Please Look After Your' mates as well.
Tours of the fire engine and special equipment unit were also given as students spoke to the representatives about fire safety in the home, potential jobs within the services and how to prevent fatal incidents from occurring.
Meningitis Research Foundation also attended Playmates week on Thursday, setting up an informative stand within the Student Union to attract students and promote awareness of the illness.
Representatives from the foundation spent the day encouraging students to sign up to climb Kilimanjaro next summer in order to raise money for Meningitis research. A topic close to the hearts of our students at Winchester university, it was fantastic to see students across the years take an interest in looking out for themselves and their friends.
