What a year it has been, we have fully celebrated our achievements here at The University of Winchester and Winchester Student Union has excelled in creating a fantastic student experience for students this year and here we are about to boast about it a little bit more….
Let’s start by giving a huge virtual round of applause for the fantastic Staff at Winchester Student Union who work tirelessly all year around. Their work has also been recognised externally where at the start of the academic year The Vault won the award for Best Student Union Venue and then at the end of April The Vault won the NUS Best Bar None scheme for the third consecutive year, scoring 100% in both the on-site and off-site assessments! Go Winchester!
This year has not been without its challenges, however in true Winchester SU spirit students have been patient, understanding and collaborated to make changes which has meant that the Executive Team have been able to work quickly and efficiently with both Student Union and Senior Management Staff. We have successfully dealt with a UCU Marketing Boycott by keeping students informed at all times, worked on supporting and representing students during the Union Staff Strikes and investigated the options of removing The University of Winchester as an institution from the invasive website RateMash.
The last three weeks of May have been Manic. If you are a follower of Comms on Campus you will have read of the three successful award nights, The Student Union Awards, Student Lead Teaching Awards and The Student Union Staff Awards! Both students and staff were recognised for their achievements and commitment in being the driving force behind our much loved Student Union. We also had a brilliant turn out to ‘Colours’ that really showcased the sporting talent we have at Winchester. With the teams scrubbing up well in suits and dresses the sun shone to celebrate the achievements of Team Winchesters clubs and individuals.

Our first FLIRT! back was a Foam Party which had more foam that The Vault had seen before, for some brilliant photos of the night check out the FLIRT! Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154093249200207.1073741867.69231130206&type=1
With the music getting cheesier by the week, the last two Bops of the year saw some fantastic team costumes and led to a sell-out final Bop, which proved too emotional for some third years (my apologies, it gets to everyone!) with the traditional ‘sit-down, one more song’ at the end of the night.
We also have had an amazing 1920’s themed SELL-OUT Summer Ball with 1001 students attending, a night to remember, filled with cocktail bars, casino games, live 1920’s music and an brilliant performance from Neon Jungle that topped off the evening. Everybody put so much effort into their 1920’s outfits which went perfectly with the beautiful décor that transformed the Student Union into a real Great Gatsby party venue.
In the final week of May we had the End Of Term Party, where third years received a free ‘Class of 2014’ t-shirt and the last Drink The Bar Dry event where third years really made the most of the last days in The Vault with its drinks prices.
And FINALY! A huge thank you to every student I have come into contact with this year in my role of Communications Officer. I have had the most fantastic third and final year at Uni and it has been a huge pleasure to volunteer at the Student Union to work as part of an inspiring Executive Team to ensure the Student experience at Winchester is the best.
I could spend for ever telling you about all the amazing and heart-warming moments I have encountered which has made being Comms officer so rewarding but I would be writing forever, (and no-one wants a repeat of the Bop tears). I am so grateful for everyone who has promoted, read and enjoyed this blog that has grown so far from my first post in Freshers week! I am now officially handing my role and this blog to the talented and fantastic Catherine Tully, who will be your Communications Officer 2014/15 (BE NICE TO HER) and no-doubt be extremely successful. Good Luck Tully!
Thank you for making my own student experience so memorable!
Alice Plaskett. Communications Officer 2013/14
PS: Students from The University of Winchester are still doing incredible things even though the year has finished. 5 students are taking on the challenge of running from Winchester to Paris in aid of Cancer Research, check out their online Video Blogs on Facebook and their just giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/winchestertoparis
