Tuesday of Playmates week was dedicated to teaching students about personal safety and encouraging them to be body aware.
The day started when Becca Williams the local PCSO from Hampshire Constabulary arrived to talk to students passing through the Vault about the importance of personal safety whilst at university. Armed with invaluable information and advice, Becca’s stall was filled with informative leaflets and
freebies including rape alarms, bells for purses and other merchandise to remind students to be aware whilst out and about.
In the afternoon, a free Self Defence class was held in the dance studio, introducing students to a few basic moves to repeat if ever in a compromising situation. The representatives from Winchester Judo and Martial
Arts Club demonstrated Aikido moves which are based on moving to avoid attack and then restraining the assailant. Advocating protection and not violence the representatives also demonstrated more advanced techniques showcasing what students would be able to accomplish after perseverance and practice to protect themselves in more severe situations, if need be. Although the session had
serious undertones, it was enjoyed by all as participants were partnered up to try the moves on each other, taking the role of the assailant and the target.
‘Tuesday also saw the launch of ‘Body Gossip’, advertising for novice or budding writers to submit, poems, monologues, or group or dance pieces all based around body image and issues. A selection of entries will then be performed by volunteers over two show dates in the coming year. Their aim is to enable people to embrace the way the look and feel, by accepting we are all different yet equally beautiful promoting the importance of positive body image! More information about this exciting project can be found at…
