SO you’ve got the grades, you’ve accepted place at the University of Winchester, you arrive, you unpack, WOO.... but what next?
One of the first things you might notice on your move-in day is how brightly everyone dresses in Winchester. I promise you its for a reason, student helpers will be dressed in lovely colour co-ordinated tops to help you guys know exactly who is available for a helping hand and easy directions to wherever it is you’re heading.
You know that saying ‘There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers’? Its true! No matter how big or small feel free to chat to the Fresher's Helpers on your move in day about ANYTHING.
Next up is (Other colours and stuff)….
So now all there is left to do is experience all that the University of Winchester has to offer! One solid piece of advice I can give any Fresher when they first get into their house: LEAVE YOUR ROOM DOOR OPEN. Or failing that: WALK INTO PEOPLE’S ROOMS WHO HAVE LEFT THEIR DOOR OPEN. Making that initial (and often at times awkward) leap into making new friends has to start at some point, so why not start the process as soon as possible? Great conversation starters include:
1.) Asking "where are you from?". You are guaranteed to meet people from all over the UK and beyond and it saves the embarrassment of having to ask them mid second semester “where are you from again?”
2.) Asking them "what events are you going to during Freshers Fortnight?". Gets the conversation going AND gives you a chance to find out what kind of activities they are in to!
3.) Asking them "do you keep up to date with that hilarious and insightful Communications Blog online?". The answer will be yes. I hope.
As far as events over move-in weekend go, first up on Saturday you’ll get a chance to see our very own Dan Forster and Blake Hutchings host this year’s first Big Fat Quiz. A chance for everyone to put their brains together and fight it out for first place and a cash prize!! Entry is just £1 per person with a maximum of 6 people per team – a great way to get to know your new housemates and meet even more people :)
Afterwards why not head downstairs to The Vault to attend our infamous Exchange night? A night where the popular drink selling in the night become more expensive, whilst the less popular drinks go down in price – make sense? With live updates on screen dotted around The Vault, it doesn’t take a stock market genius to pick up a bargain J Tickets are just £3 with an NUS card or £5 without, grab a ticket now or forever regret it!
Sunday is a day of firsts in the form of Freshtival! Free entry from 2pm for hog roast and local ale and cider tasting in the afternoon, carrying on into the evening with live bands and entertainers galore! Tickets are needed after 8pm but are only £3 with an NUS card – an event not to be missed!
To top it off, all weekend free films will be shown in the Stripe Auditorium starting from 12pm!
If all of that doesn’t make you excited to be a Fresher (or at least wish you were again) then I don’t know what will!
So have a fabulous weekend meeting new people, having a boogie in The Vault, and getting watered, not slaughtered, there is nothing left for me to say other than good luck, have fun, and remember: you can’t spell ‘super’ without ‘SU’!
