Go Green Week Kicks off on Monday here at Winchester Student Union! We are asking you to get involved with all things ethical and environmental to show your support in making the world a greener place.
This week will play host to events, visits and competitions all around campus to encourage students at the University to join The Student Union Officers and staff in their commitment to the environment.
Meat-Free Monday
Did you know: 'Meat and dairy farming produces 18% of the planet’s climate-changing gases; that’s more than all of the emissions from the world’s planes, cars and lorries put together'
To start the week you will find Meat-free and reduced meat specials in the foodhall and SU shop.
Why not extend Meat-Free Monday from campus to your student accommodation and whip up some vegetarian dishes with your housemates, Vegetable Curry, Sweet Potato Fries or Veggie Tortillas. This list is endless, check out some students own recipes here: http://studentrecipes.com/recipes/vegetarian/
Travel - Light Tuesday
Did you know: Transport accounts for 40% of a university’s emissions
We are all guilty of driving into University, or getting the bus back from town when the weather is letting us down, but this week why not think about hopping on a bike instead.
There will be a Championing efficient transport stall in the Terrace Bar, and Bicycle maintenance & proficiency workshops will also be hosted.
Waste-Not Wednesday
Did you know: About a third of UK universities are still recycling less than 25% of their waste.
Unwanted clothes from summers gone by? Turn them into Bop Costumes or give them to charity!
Bananas a little brown, apples slightly soft? Most fruit and veg will last longer than its labelled sell by date, why not turn these into smoothies?
Here at the SU there will be Information points for recycling held in the Terrace Bar and Waste audits and halls visits will also be taking place to educate student about recycling!
Switch - Off Thursday
Did you know: Home electricity consumption accounts for roughly 1 tonne of carbon per person so imagine the impact that 6,000 Winchester Students have collectively.
Make sure TV's aren't left on Standby when you leave for university and lights in Halls and Homes are switched off! Yes, in some cases you may not be paying the electricity bill, but you will be paying the price of global warming and the damaging of the environment.
We will be holding Student Switch Off Competitions and hosting an information stall, as well as holding a Union Blackout Event, keep your eyes peeled for more information this week!
Funding Foto Friday
Did you know: Every household produces about one tonne of rubbish per year and most of it is buried in enormous landfill sites.
This is contributing to turning countryside an eyesore, so to raise awareness a Photo contest and exhibition will be held in the Vault to display your photos tell us why the environment can still make a captivating picture.
There will also be a Cake Sale and RSPB visitors in the Terrace Bar and look out for the Busking Society on campus as they present: Busking 4 Change!
