It’s late at night, and instead of attending a brilliant BOP or fantastic Friday night at the SU, you are stuck in the library. Twelve hundred energy drinks or cups of coffee down already, the chocolate supplies are running low and you are beginning to feel like just giving up. Throwing in the towel. Pouring cold water on your future ambitions.
My name is Harry Sampson. I’m your friendly neighbourhood Communications Officer and today we’ll be talking about the terrors of assignment stress and how to find ways to cope.
We all face difficult times at university, whether academic or otherwise, but that is no good reason to falter. Sleep is a valuable necessity, but other than that you should be using every hour of the day to better yourself, finish that assignment, and have a damn good time. You are paying a significant amount to be here, so make the most of the experience.
Similar to my article at the beginning of the semester about dealing with homesickness, I will be suggesting some coping strategies for fighting that assignment stress and staying on top of your deadlines – while of course having a great and rewarding time along the way.

SU Events
As you will have seen from the entertainment schedules in halls and from the many posters, social media posts and scattered conversations around campus, the Student Union hold a LOT of fun events. A list of the upcoming events can be found on the website – with so much going on, it is impossible to find time to attend all of them!
Of course, having a brilliant night out at BOP and the upcoming Ski Party is great, but there are also some more relaxed events. A particular favourite of mine is the Thursday student lounge evenings, as is the weekly ‘Mad About Movies’ on a Sunday.

Whatever takes your fancy, a good evening at your SU is guaranteed to make you forget about that harmful stress.
Sound Radio
It’s a well-known opinion of mine that the best way of coping with stress is to listen to the fantastic programmes broadcast by our very own student-led radio. On weekdays from 10am to 10pm, the innovative style of the individual radio hosts, mixed with current and classic music of many genres is a fun and friendly way to chill while writing a long essay.

Volunteering
It is often a common maxim that helping fellow human beings makes you feel better; providing a sense of selfless accomplishment in comparison to the dreariness of a cold report-writing session. Even after having handing in your assignment chances are you will have to wait a while to get your grades; what better way to spend the time helping others rather than worrying the weeks away?
There are lots of areas to get involved here; community activism, picking litter, assisting elderly residents, joining Roteract and Winchester HUB – so much to keep you busy and calm those nerves.

Societies & Sports Teams
It is never too late to join a society or sports team. For many, being part of a society with people who share the same beliefs and goals as you is one of the best parts of being a student. Winning a game against another institution, having an intense debate, performing a play to critical acclaim or watching a film in the Stripe together is priceless.
And that doesn’t even cover the life-long friendships you will forge while sharing your beloved hobbies with others.
If you can’t find the society you want to join, contact [email protected] and we can point you in the right direction.

Chocolate. Lots of Chocolate.
My personal preference for dealing with stress is excessive amounts of chocolate, ironing and writing blog posts.
Everyone has their own methods of coping with stress. The above solutions are only a few, but in a lot of cases extra-curricular activities is an innovative solution to the paralysis of stressful assignment worries.
As always, don’t suffer in silence and get involved in as much as possible.
Enjoy!
